Birds, butterflies, dragonflies, amphibians, reptiles, cats and other mammals, and plants - the Lower Rio Grande Valley has them all! Green Jays, Great Kiskadees, Red-Crowned Parrots, Plain Chachalacas - many of the fifty resident bird species are easily found - 513 recorded bird species. When you consider that the state of Texas has 630 bird species and the whole North America American Birding Association area has 914 bird species, it makes our Valley quite a remarkable hot spot, the richest and most diverse bird watching area in the United States and Canada, with over 300 butterfly species, 120 dragonfly (odonate) species, and over 1200 plant species.
